Background of the Study
In recent years, banditry has become a prevalent form of violence in rural parts of Northern Nigeria, especially in states like Zamfara. The phenomenon is characterized by violent attacks by armed groups who engage in abductions, extortion, and killings, severely affecting communities' security and socio-economic activities (Aminu & Nasiru, 2023). In Maru Local Government Area (LGA), the escalation of banditry has disrupted daily life and caused significant fear among residents, particularly in rural areas.
The impact of banditry on education has been particularly devastating. Schools, which were once safe havens for learning, have now become targets of attacks. Bandits abduct students and teachers, loot educational facilities, and burn down schools, leading to school closures and significantly decreasing school attendance (Usman & Bello, 2024). The fear instilled by these criminal activities has forced many children out of school, further exacerbating Nigeria’s educational crisis, especially in rural areas.
The importance of education as a tool for socio-economic development cannot be overstated, yet in areas affected by banditry, access to education remains a significant challenge. This study seeks to assess the extent to which banditry impacts school attendance in Maru LGA, exploring the direct and indirect consequences of insecurity on children’s ability to attend school.
Statement of the Problem
Banditry has led to the closure of schools and displacement of families in Maru LGA. As a result, children's education is often interrupted, and communities are left in a cycle of insecurity and underdevelopment. Schools have been forced to adopt temporary measures like shorter hours or relocation to safer areas, but these measures have not fully resolved the issue. Furthermore, children from affected communities face psychological trauma, which further hinders their academic performance and attendance (Zubairu & Abdulazeez, 2024).
Although various stakeholders, including the government, have attempted to address the issue, banditry continues to cause widespread disruption, leaving many children unable to attend school regularly. This study aims to explore the underlying reasons for these disruptions and examine the broader implications of banditry on educational outcomes in Maru LGA.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the extent of banditry's impact on school attendance in Maru LGA.
To examine the coping strategies employed by schools and students in response to banditry.
To suggest potential solutions to mitigate the effects of banditry on education in rural communities.

How does banditry affect school attendance in Maru LGA?

Research Hypotheses
Banditry significantly reduces school attendance in Maru LGA.
Schools and students have developed coping mechanisms to deal with banditry, though these are not sufficient.
Government and community-based interventions can improve school attendance by reducing the impact of banditry.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the rural communities within Maru LGA in Zamfara State, specifically examining school attendance from 2020 to 2025. Limitations include potential challenges in accessing affected areas due to security concerns, as well as possible bias in reporting from stakeholders involved.
